The roads are slick enough some places to not let the tires grab enough to unlock the diff. They need a small amount of resistance to unlock. It'll be locked while at rest or driving straight. They disengage around corners with a light go pedal, but will reengage if given some torque input.
I tried 4x4 on the street once. :eek:
