ongoing work party

hmmm. never knew that. My winch has been hooked to the side post for the past several years without problem, but since I have bothe top and side mounts, maybe I'll switch 'em.

Well if you've been running your bigger winch off of the side posts for years on top+side post batteries, then I'd say experience wins out over theory here. Cheaper and easier to get side terminals than new cable clamps.

If your looking for this type with the wing nuts:

Sentry Hardware sells them pretty cheap in 2 packs with 1 slightly bigger than the other for the different size + and - posts. Napa usually only has the smaller size if I remember right. I still have the OEM terminal clamps from my LJ that'll work in a pinch if you want them.

Come to think of , though, you might need 2 of the smaller ones because the stud on the larger one might be to big for the terminal ring on a TJ battery cable.

Hang on a minute...

Thing with that is I need to connect both my standard battery cables and the winch cables to the same post...they make top terminals that accept a standard cable and have an extra wingnut post on top like those there. I need to take a look at my cables, I don't have enough cable to cut any off and attach new clamps, it was a pain to get the current setup onto the battery as it is.

I take it your cables have molded clamps. Here's what mine look like and the OEM ones.

I've seen people attach the winch power cables right to the main cable clamp bolts. Shouldn't need a separate stud.

Might need to clear away some material so I can fit the eyelets over the studs, but that might be the best bet for the moment.

Going by Darick's prices for the carpet and the glue, I don't think this is going to happen right now...i'll go by and re-check prices but they'll likely be higher.

I did the same set up for mine. it is easy and farey check to.

alrighty, instead of making a new thread, I'll just bump this one.

Does anyone here have experience removing locking lug nuts, preferrably (but not necessarily) preventing their destruction? (For the smart-alecs like me out there...without the key which I no longer possess.)

Also, I need a U-joint and at least the passenger's side U-bearing changed out. The bearing was calling my name today on the way to my interview.

I'd like to get this done by this weekend, definitely before Feb 1 when I leave...and I'll need a place. I hate bumming other peoples' garages and tools but hopefully by at least this time next year I'll be able to pass on the favor.

Warning: the last U-joint took forever to change, because the caps were seized. Mark and Donald know all about it. I'll try to soak this one in PB Blaster beforehand but with the cold, I'm not sure it'll work well at all.

I might also get my lights hooked up as well as my CB antenna and the peaked and tuned CB I got from Mark wired in, but those aren't priorities...I can do that on my off-time up at camp.

My weekend is shot, otherwise, I'd offer mine up.

I have always found a 12 point socket that is just a little too small to go over the nut and then beat it on with a sledge hammer and then turn it out. If that doesn't work I have also welded bolts to the nut to get them off. Hope that helps. worst case drill the whole thing out.

Can you post up a pic of the lug nuts? I have several different keys and specialty wheel sockets.

I'll snap one tomorrow.

forgot about doing this...got one today.

Biggest issue I see is the clearance to the center cap.

I am using side posts for now, but I want to convert to a dual batteries to solve the problem all together.

Joe, save your time and energy, take an air chisel and in go at a angle and in less than 10 sec. it will be off as it will start to spin off as it bites in. Done it so many times when I was Service Mgr. I even had to show the "Professional Tire Specialists" at Sams Club when we took a customers car over for tires. A new lug nut is alot cheaper than time!!!

I actually have at least 4 spare lugnuts to replace these with anyway. I'll see about the air chisel deal.

This is getting mighty close too and I still don't have a kind soul offering the generous use of their garage. Wink

I'd offer mine but I have too much going on in there for the next week.
I don't have that particular key and my grabber socket isn't going to clear the center cap so yeah, try the chisel.

well, instead of wasting Cory's time, I went to napa initially to see about getting a new key for the lugnuts. they didn't have any and couldn't order one without the code to my lugnuts, which I don't have. So instead I got a deeply discounted old surface-rusted removal cup which I'll use later today to replace the lugnuts.
